About ADVENTURES WITH VULTURES…

A folk singer-songwriter evokes a certain image. Matt Sauter breaks that image. With his backward ball cap, knuckle tattoos, and knee-shredded shorts, the lone singer/songwriter behind Adventures with Vultures tinkers with the image of what a folk singer should be. Adventures With Vultures’ Matt Sauter, who was a mere 24 years old when he signed with Original 1265 Recordings, hails from Plymouth—a small town that sits roughly 25 miles outside of Detroit.

That location is crucial to his music: a rural area outside a major city. After all, like all good folk music, Adventures With Vultures’ songs are about specific places and the people who give those places their personality. Stylistically, it’s different from what Sauter is used to—he spent the better part of this decade writing hip-hop music, not folk music. Mos Def and J. Cole are cited among his influences, but so are Carol King, Shakey Graves, and Nathaniel Rateliff. Perhaps that’s why Adventures With Vultures brings a welcome, abrasive quality to tender, stripped-down songs.

“The Junction EP isn’t just a project for me,” he states, “it’s for my family that I grew up with in Plymouth, MI.  It’s for all the years of making music with my brothers who gave up the same dream I’m still chasing.  It’s for all the nights recording at my buddy Fritz’s house until 5am and all the nights playing shows in front of 5 people. This EP is for all the nights writing lyrics and mastering my craft. It’s for Plymouth, Junction street and all the groups I once played with: GATSBYSecond In LineHere For The Fight and Morte Novella and Real MIT Records. I’m not done chasing my dream, it’s been the same damn dream since the 2nd grade!”

A folk singer, it is true, evokes a certain image. Meet Matt Sauter—an invigorating folk singer who will change that image.

DIME Students attend the Paul McCartney Soundcheck!

Paul.nEarlier this week legendary performer and songwriter, Paul McCartney played two nights at the newly opened Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. We were able to arrange for six of our students to accompany DIME Directors, Kevin Nixon and Sarah Clayman, to the soundcheck for Monday’s show.

Year 3 Drummers, Will Daniels and Duane Hewins, Year 3 Guitarist Jacob Coon, Year 2 Music Entrepreneur, Lonn Hart, Year 2 Vocalist, Devin Woodson, and Year 1 Songwriter, Jeffery Beaudoin, were all selected because of their high attendance and engagement this semester.

We asked student attendee, Devin Woodson, to share his experience:

My overall experience of Paul McCartney at the Little Caesars arena was amazing, although my classmates and I almost didn’t get into the arena because we accidentally brought our backpacks to check in! However, when DIME founders Kevin and Sarah arrived, they worked their magic to get us through the doors! I enjoyed myself at the new Little Caesars Arena – it is beautiful! It was a monumental moment for me to return there as I had recently performed the National Anthem at the arena’s ribbon cutting. It was pretty spectacular to see all the people in Detroit enjoying themselves as well!

Paul McCartney performed some of his classic songs at the soundcheck and it felt very special.  The experience was made even more special because of the time he chose to spend time with us, which was amazing. I even got to meet the lead singer of another cool band, The Pondhawks. Watching Paul McCartney will be a moment in my life that I could never forget. I was moved by the fact that he could be so warm, up close and personal. It made me realize that I can strive to achieve greatness in my career and still remember to treat people with love and respect. No matter how successful I become, I will remain humble. That, I will take with me forever.

Our recent DIME Detroit graduates have hit the ground running, working as professionals in their respective fields and integrating the lessons learned at DIME into everyday life! We caught up with two of our 2017 graduates to find out what they have been up to since graduation.

Guitarist, Jimmy Showers, has accepted a touring role with a platinum recording artist Uncle Kracker. Jimmy was initially employed as a Guitar Tech, but quickly graduated to Stage Tech, and now holds the role of Stage Manager! Over the past few months, Jimmy has traveled to over 30 states in the USA and parts of Canada too. He had this to say about his experience:

“Since graduation, life in music has brought many new experiences and lessons. I know that DIME has helped me to prepare for all of the new changes so far and those to come. I will continue work Stage Managing while I also pursue my own creative interests!”

Jimmy also shared how his DIME experience has helped him, and expressed his thanks to the DIME team:

“My experience at DIME and the relationships I built there have transformed my life. If you would’ve told me five years ago that I could build a career in the music industry, I would’ve never believed it. I am beyond thankful to the staff at DIME for helping prepare me to enter the real world of working in the music industry.”

Jimmy Showers, BA (Hons) Creative Music Performance (Guitar) Graduate

Music Entrepreneurship graduate, Edgar Duenas, has also gone straight into work in the music industry! He recently accepted a role in Guest Services with historic Detroit entertainment venue The Fillmore, and had this to say about his first day on the job:

“My first show at the Fillmore was a blast. Everyone that works at the Fillmore was very friendly and they all work hard for each other. It was amazing seeing how quickly the Fillmore team can set up and take down an entire show in such a short time. I look forward to working more concerts and can’t wait to see where the company will take me in the future.”
