How DIME prepared my child for a music industry career

Lea Wiercioch has no doubts about what DIME Detroit has done to prepare her daughter, Ali, for a career in the professional music industry during the last three years.

In one word: “Everything.”

In many more, Lea said: “They’ve got you covered here. Ali’s grown as a person and as a musician, and she’s prepared for everything a career in music can throw at her. They’ve stretched her ability; they’ve taught her the business end of the industry – the legal intricacies, everything.

“They are going to give (your student) the tools to grow and be the best (they can) be. They’ll teach you at every step and cover all the bases. I’ve been blown away.”

Ali, an aspiring folk vocalist and songwriter, will be a part of DIME Detroit’s first graduating class in June 2017. She was among a group of students – and their parents – who took a chance and were rewarded through attending the new school in downtown Detroit. The mother-daughter pair share the optimism of Ali stepping out of the world of education and into a career.

“I’ve already done things I never thought I would – I performed on stage with George Clinton – but there’s so much more that I’m ready to do now,” Ali said. “I could not feel more prepared and I’m not afraid to graduate like some of my friends attending other colleges.”

Steven Showers, whose son Jimmy will also graduate in May, places a high value on career development as part of higher education. That emphasis has been rewarded at DIME, where Jimmy has been immersed in the music field, both in class and in Detroit. The instructors, Steven points out, are working musicians who know what success takes.

“They are here to coach and counsel and pay it forward to that next generation of musicians,” Steven said. “They’ve looked at his strengths and weaknesses and made him better, made him more prepared.

“That’s what you get at DIME that you’re not going to get anywhere else.”

Soundtrack of my Life: Lucie Hanifi

15665605_10154478345464079_3620188028863420614_n

My life is but a compilation of moments and dialogue. This has been the case since I exited the womb. From the get-go, I’ve been drawn to music and oddly compelled to sing whenever I am able. Growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, gave me a unique backdrop in which to play out those musical tendencies. The urban lifestyle to which I had grown accustomed left me ill-equipped to deal with the suburban hell that is Bloomfield Hills, a barren, music-less landscape, where I was transplanted in my junior year of high school. I had always struggled to find my niche there. Now that I’ve migrated to downtown Detroit and I’m receiving a fantastic education, I feel as though I’m much closer to doing so. I’ve met some truly amazing friends and I’ve gotten to explore my connection with music whilst rapidly improving my own musical abilities. The songs I have chosen for my soundtrack range in genre and have meant different things to me at particular times in my life.

My name is Lucie Hanifi and the following compilation encapsulates my heart, soul, and above all, my growth, in their entirety.

Track 1:  Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles

Picture a dark, clear evening during the summer. The fireflies flicker and the air is thick with humidity. On those evenings, you would find my brother, my father, and me parked near Huron River on the top of my father’s old blue, slowly rusting Chevy truck. We would look at the constellations and struggle to remember the lyrics to Strawberry Fields Forever. Any time I listen this song, I would feel happy. These times would be some of the few happy memories of my childhood. In the moments when I would look at the sky, I would feel as though my time was not limited and I could be any kind of person I wanted to be. I hear the words “Living is easy with eyes closed,” and I’m instantly sent back in time.

Track 2: Lighthouse by Patrick Watson

The first word that comes to mind when I hear this is ethereal. The pitter-patter of the piano reminded me of rain dropping gently onto a window. The part that resonated with me in particular is when the song swells and Patrick Watson says he was “Dreaming of a lighthouse in the woods.” There was one day that I skipped school in my senior year of high school— which I did quite often— when it was a serene, gray day and raining lightly. I drove aimlessly and wondered what I was even going to do with my life. “What is my purpose?” I would continue to wonder as the anxiety that debilitated me continued to consume my thoughts. I longed to have a lighthouse in the woods, a safe haven where I had no accountability nor responsibility. Ultimately, I remember these moments in my life as being the most unhappy. I thought of the feeling in the pit of my stomach that represented my anxiety and my ever-increasing depression and I think I decided to grow up because of those times and that gut feeling of unhappiness. I didn’t want to feel that way ever again, especially not of my own volition.

Track 3: God’s Whisper by Raury

You’re now seeing the most recent evolution of my musical taste. It’s a little bit more playful and exciting while still conveying a message that is relevant to me, at least for the time being. The song starts off with the lines, “I won’t live a lie/ I won’t live a life on my knees/ You think I am nothing/ But you’ve got something coming.” A few months ago, when I first started school at DIME, I was going through somewhat of an existential crisis that rivaled those that I had had in high school. I realized that I needed to start treating myself in a loving manner if I was to expect anyone else to do the same. I realized that I needed to start taking responsibility for my actions and no longer play the victim. I, above all, realized I needed to change. “God’s Whisper” empowered me to do that and along the way I began to allow myself to feel special and different and to feel good about my progress. I didn’t want to be dishonest with myself any longer nor did I wish to continue spiraling because this time no one would be there to catch me. Even if there was, I would want the ability to save myself. I no longer wanted to escape, but rather enjoy and savor these moments of my youth that are astonishingly fleeting.

When I started writing my soundtrack initially, I struggled with this concept. I worried that my selections would be more revealing of me than I would like them to be. That being said, identifying songs that have made a difference in my life does require a certain amount of self- awareness, which has been one of the main traits I’ve been struggling to develop over the course of this chronology of my life. Ultimately, your selections do reveal who you are in some capacity, and in realizing that, I came to the conclusion that my album— and my life— has been tinged with the desire to escape and to no longer be in my own shoes. Escapism is something that everyone can relate to. It’s easier than actually facing your problems. When the listener comes to the end of my soundtrack, I’d like them to feel as though it’s okay to flounder and to be lost. Life changes constantly and it’s natural to not have your life together 100% of the time. I’ve learned that it’s best to feel your pain and acknowledge it, but don’t wallow in it. Growth doesn’t happen while one is static. It happens when you’re finally motivated to leave behind what no longer serves a purpose in your life. Thank you, reader, for taking the time to listen to my life in music.

Soundtrack of my Life: Devin Woodson

fileMy name is Devin Miguel Woodson. My true stomping ground is, and always will be, the west side of Detroit, Michigan. Detroit is my favorite city in the world. I may move away one day but this will ALWAYS be my safe-haven. Detroit has played a huge part in the soundtrack to my life. These songs speak to the pain I’ve experienced in Detroit but also the triumph. My soundtrack is all about me realizing its okay to not be okay, to not fit the ‘norm’, or conform to others’ standards. These songs and events mean so much to me and represent life-changing and pivotal moments in my life so far. My goal is always to let anyone that I meet know that they are not alone in this life.

Track 1: Lean on Me, Bill Withers

I was fourteen years old and I barely knew what the word mosaic meant, let alone what a company with ‘mosaic’ as its name could do for me. I first became aware of the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit when they performed a show called “Crossing 8 Mile”, and from that moment on I was hooked! The music in the show was so beautiful, filled with peace, love, joy, and happiness. The actors in the company made you laugh and then cry.  It was at this moment I knew I had to be a part of the group – I had never found a place where I truly felt free to express myself but I found it at Mosaic. Who knew this would be the place I call home for the next 4 years? When I auditioned and was successful, that was exactly what it felt like too. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and it was all so new and slightly overwhelming, especially for someone like me, who had never experienced love like that before. There was so much support and I felt able to express myself musically and personally in ways I had not been able to previously. The song which expresses my discovery of Mosaic is “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers. This song represents the love and spirit of community I found there. It was also the first song I ever learned as part of the group.

Track 2: Count on Me, Whitney Houston and CeCe Winans

There was a particular moment at Mosaic which stands out as key moment in my life. We were performing our annual concert for singers (Singsation) and there was a woman in the audience who I recognized – I had been noticing her at Mosaic all the time. After the concert had ended, the lady approached me and gave me a bunch of flowers. She said: “My husband asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday and I told him I wanted to hear Devin sing. Your voice has the power to change the world and the way people view it.” It was at that moment I realized that my singing was not only something I loved and wanted to do for the rest of my life, but that it affected others too; through my singing I could be there for those that do not have a voice; to let them know they have a friend and someone to count on. For this reason, I think it is only appropriate that a song on my soundtrack is “Count on Me” by Whitney Houston and CeCe Winans. Whenever I listen to the lyrics of the song I always think that they are so fitting for the feelings of pride and joy I experienced at that very moment I spoke to the woman from the audience. I was there for her, as she was there for me.

Track 3: I’m Here, Fantasia (from The Color Purple)

The final song of my soundtrack is “I’m Here” from the Broadway musical The Color Purple. This song represents the long, three-year journey that got me to DIME. After a year of applying to schools with no success, a friend of mine told me about a school he had been accepted into. He said it would be the perfect place for me so I got in contact with the school, auditioned, and was successfully admitted onto the Vocals program. But there was a hitch – I could not afford it. I came back a few times and auditioned again, but there was still no financial aid, which broke my heart as I knew I could not make it work financially. When I found out that DIME had partnered with MSU Denver I was finally able to apply. I got my financial aid, attended the orientation session and one semester later I am at the top of my class! I have made the best friends I have ever had and I am pulling inspiration from every nook and cranny of my life to pour into my music.  People are recognizing my gifts, and realizing there is potential for me to succeed and make my dreams come true. The song ‘I’m Here’ signifies my journey: the highs and lows I’ve been through to arrive at this moment.

DIME: A week in the life of students

StudentphotoThere is no limit to what students experience at DIME Detroit during the four years they study at the school that develops professionals who are ready for a sustained career in the music industry.
A look at a typical week is invigorating – and exhausting – if students take advantage of all DIME offers.
“You never want to miss a day down here,” said Will Daniels, a drum student. “There’s always something going on, something that’s going to help you make a career and build a portfolio.”
“You don’t know who’s going to stop by or what might pop up. That’s why, mostly, you’ll see everyone hanging around even when they don’t have class that day.”
Stop and think about that.
How many college students are heading to their respective schools on days they are otherwise free to spend as they wish?
At DIME, it’s commonplace.
Here’s a snapshot of one week at DIME Detroit in early March, 2017:
Monday through Friday: Of course, students attend classes. There are individual and group performance classes for vocalists, guitarists, bassists, and drummers. There is one-on-one guidance and songwriting instruction; impromptu jam sessions in common areas; discussions about how business, marketing, law and copyright relate to the music industry.
Thursday night: DIME’s on-site music venue, which is named The Underground @ DIME, hosts a free event called Turntable Thursday that brings in Detroit-area DJ’s in an effort to cultivate the music scene of all genres in Southeast Michigan. Other Thursday evening events include DIME Presents, which features local bands and acoustic artists, and even a Hip Hop night. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the performances start at 7 p.m.
Friday: Kern Brantley, a Detroit legend and veteran of A-list international tours, visits the Underground for a masterclass that informs and educates DIME students about how to land professional gigs. Brantley is a bass guitarist and musical director who has worked and toured with Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Young Jeezy, and Jay Z. In the two-hour session he shares how he got started and how aspiring musicians can launch their own careers.
Saturday: It’s time for another show as three Michigan-based bands enter the Underground for live performances. The concert features two alternative/punk rock bands hailing from Grand Rapids and the third from Livonia.
Sunday: Rest and then repeat.
