DIME’s Wellness Week kicks off today!

We are very excited to launch our first ever Wellness Week today! DIME’s Student Services team have organized a range of activities and workshops which aim to raise awareness of the importance of self-care and good mental health. Each day of the week is themed, and will focus on promoting a specific way that students can manage their mental health. Themes include mindfulness, gratitude, fitness, positive self-image, and healthy eating. We are also looking forward to welcoming some external guests. A representative from local mental health charity Suck it Suicide will be on hand to answer questions from students on Monday, while Lauren from the Arbor Wellness Center will be joining us for a yoga session on Wednesday. On Friday we welcome guests from Michigan State’s Extension Program who will be sharing healthy eating ideas and tips on how to eat well on a college student’s budget.

A recent study published in October by Help Musicians UK found that 70% of musicians have struggled with anxiety and depression. Activities such as Wellness Week have been designed to address these high percentages and promote positive engagement with mental health.  DIME’s Head of Student Services, Jess Hamlin, said:

“Student support is at the heart of DIME’s ethos. Our aim is to ensure that every student feels supported and able to get help if they need it. We also want students to know that sometimes it’s okay not to be okay, and that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. We hope that Wellness Week helps to de-stigmatize mental illness, and provide students with positive ways to manage their mental health.”

Outside of Wellness Week, students are able to access 1-2-1 support from the Student Services team at any time. DIME has also developed relationships with local agencies who can offer free and low cost therapy, housing services, and addiction programs. For questions, please contact Student Services.

Student Spotlight: Ryan Haley (Guitar)

DIME Detroit caught up with one of our newest students,  Ryan Haley who is studying the Commercial Music Performance (Guitar)  degree program.

1.What is your background in music and education?
I started playing guitar when I was 9, and went through a whole mess of band programs in high school. I was big into playing Tuba, and almost went after that as a career! Eventually, I got wise and decided to run with guitar, which was my primary instrument anyway.

2.How did you find out about DIME Detroit?
I first found out about DIME through the Keith Moon drum contest that was filmed when The Who came to town last and played on the big screen at the concert at Joe Louis. I thought that it was such a cool idea, and was the first things that drew me to DIME.

3.What made you choose to apply to study with us?
I think it was DIME’s accessibility and welcoming recruitment staff that drove me to pursue an education in music. Financial Aid for me was IMPOSSIBLE to figure out, (as I’m hoping a lot of other people understand) and I never felt intimidated or hesitant to ask Elise, Drew, or anyone else for answers.

4.What are your short and/or longer term academic and career goals?
I think more than anything, I want to feel good about myself as a musician. To be able to call myself proficient as a guitar player and be really comfortable in saying so is all I’ve ever been after.

5.What do you find most rewarding about your studies so far?
Having instructors that can give me consistently challenging and valuable content to play or learn. Being a guitarist at DIME gives me a sense that a plateau in skill doesn’t exist. There’s always something to improve, and the faculty here have really helped me attack many of my bad playing habits.

6.What do you find most challenging about your studies and how do you plan to overcome that challenge?
I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself to be a good player. Being surrounded by outstanding musicians at every glance makes this a really easy habit to fall into. So far, the best plan I’ve devised to overcome that feeling is to just play and practice as much as I can. Hopefully one day I can catch up to the curve!

7.Who are some of your music influences? / Who is your role model?
I’ve always wanted to be as versatile and as dedicated to my roots as Eric Clapton is. He’s been my favorite guitarist since I fell into Blues music, and has a really great catalog of tunes to listen to and learn from.

Student Spotlight: Lizzy Berg (Vocals)

Liz 4

DIME Detroit caught up with one of our newest students,  Lizzy Berg who is studying the Commercial Music Performance (Vocals)  degree program.

1.What is your background in music and education?

I started vocal training at the age of five years old and took private lessons until I was 17. I am trained in operatic/classical style, rock, pop, and blues. I have been in choirs my whole life and I was also in the Elite Jills Choir in high school. I’ve been in two bands and I have recorded a solo album and released a single with my first band. I have also recorded a  whole EP with my current band.  In my youth, I was in an all-girls group called Motor City melodies from age 11-13.

2.How did you find out about DIME Detroit?

I learned about DIME through Drew Schultz at a college fair at my high school. I also heard about it through a family friend, Brain Pastoria who owned a recording studio in harmony park downtown.

3.What made you choose to apply to study with us?

I think DIME Detroit is the best place for me because it’s not a traditional school. It’s very unique, and has helpful staff and friendly students. DIME fits my personality and fits the best with the way that I prefer to work and learn. DIME Detroit is very musically oriented rather than general education institutions and it’s not a classical music school.

4.What are your short and/or long-term academic and career goals?

I want to be a singer/songwriter that performs on stage, and maybe one day run a recording studio. I want to be able to take my band long term and take it all the way to the bigger stages and stadiums. I want to be able to put on a show like one of my favorite bands, Guns N’ Roses, even when I’m in my late 60s. I would like to spread a message to the world and write music based on real experiences in life to make sure people know they aren’t alone with whatever they have gone through or will go through. I want to graduate from my program at DIME Detroit so that I have a career to fall back on but in the music industry.

5.What do you find most rewarding about your studies so far?

What I find most rewarding is that it’s basically a no judgment type of attitude here at DIME Detroit and it’s a really progressive school that’s non-competitive. I really enjoy the fact that I’ve learned a lot from the classes and that I am creating music industry and student musician connections for my music.

6.What do you find most challenging about your studies and how do you plan to overcome that challenge?

What I have found the most challenging is getting 100% comfortable with the live performance workshop class. I plan to overcome it with a different mindset towards the different genres and styles.

7.Who are some of your music influences? / Who is your role model?

My biggest role models and influences are Guns N’ RosesEvanescence, Halestorm,  Pat Benatar and Joan Jett.
