Student Spotlight: The Lows Are Rising with Angelo Coppola

The Lows1

DIME DETROIT Music Entrepreneurship Senior Angelo Coppola, is revving up his new project “The Lows” for an EP release show Saturday, December 30th at The Loving Touch in Ferndale. The show will be The Lows second live performance, following their debut to a packed house at the world-famous Machine Shop in Flint earlier this month. We sat down with Angelo to discuss the project.

How have your studies at DIME prepared you for this moment?

Over the past 3 years, the business program at DIME has really shown me how to run a successful music release. We have constantly studied how to be successful and the steps you need to take in order to achieve your goals, and without that, I wouldn’t have this project or any knowledge on how to take it to the next level! I am so ready to show the world what I am made of!

How has DIME impacted your approach in releasing music?

With recording and releasing this album, I have learned that it is super important for the project to look and sound as professional as possible. With the endless amounts of new music being released every day, it is important to take the necessary steps to stand out from the crowd. I enlisted Chuck Alkazian, a Grammy award-winning producer to ensure the recordings sounded as good as possible and to make sure the packaging and artwork stood out and looked cool! All of this was stuff I learned from my classes at DIME Detroit, which focused on how to be successful in this industry!

Who is in the band, The Lows?

Providing the heavy beats for The Lows is DIME Detroit year 3 Drum student Duane Hewins. Duane is a perfect match to enforce the band’s hard-hitting grooves. Brandon McNall was brought aboard to play guitar and Johnny Abel, also known as Wolf, is our bassist. The chemistry between everyone was magic! Wolf helped bring in guitarist Mike Leslie, of Candlebox, who is also celebrating a new release and performing with his own power trio The Mike Leslie Band on December 30th.

The Lows 3Angelo credits DIME with helping him keep his motivation high and preparing him for the many responsibilities a professional musician must maintain. He looks forward to earning his degree from DIME this coming Spring, and plans to continue teaching music lessons, working at music licensing firm North Star Media, drumming for other artists, and leading The Lows to a successful future.

Catch The Lows at The Loving Touch on December 30th! The venue is located at 22634 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale. Doors are at 7pm, tickets are  $7 and all ages are welcome.

The Lows EP is available worldwide on all major download and streaming services, and physical copies are available through CDbaby or at any of the band’s shows. Listen to The Lows on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and Google Play Music

Instructor Profile: Antea Shelton, Head of Songwriting

DIME has an amazing staff and faculty who are immersed in the music industry and teaching the next generation of musicians, songwriters, and music entrepreneurs here in downtown Detroit. We sat down with our Head of Songwriting, Antea Shelton, to ask her some questions about her career, and her experience teaching at DIME Detroit.

Antea Shelton

What first inspired you to pursue music?

My father is a singer. So, it’s definitely in my bloodline. When my older sister was born, he started doing two-part harmony with her, and then when I came along we started doing three-part harmony; then when my younger sister, Anesha, came along the three of us sang. It just naturally progressed after that, because we discovered that we were actually pretty good, because our dad really trained us to sing and we sang in church too.

When did you know you could write songs?

I was a story writer as a kid. So, I just liked writing very weird and super visual creative stories. And, a lot of the times the stories would rhyme, so it was like poetry. My dad saw some of this stuff, and started to explain that the money in the music industry was in songwriting. So, I tried it and it worked.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I first became a teacher when I was studying voice in college; it grew from my desire to help my friends who were having voice problems. I had a lot of vocal issues, because of allergies and poor vocal maintenance, and general bad habits (i.e., smoking). In going to voice therapy, I was able to get better and then I started to show my friends what to do and not to do. And then all of a sudden I realized that I loved helping people with the experiences that I had. I just enjoyed it.

Is that what still motivates you to teach today?

Absolutely! 100%! To take everything that I’ve learned about singing, songwriting, and the music industry and to be able to take fresh young songwriters and singers who have all these dreams and aspirations and to show them what I did, and to show them the ropes, it really keeps that fire burning. It’s really fulfilling to see. It’s like watering a plant. You nurture it, and all of a sudden it’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen.

What do you like most about teaching at DIME?

I like the culture of DIME. These are students who may not have gone to a traditional college and we are able to offer them a way into the music industry that is an alternative to classical music, opera, or orchestral music. It’s the vibe of the place. These kids are not just shooting in the dark and hoping that maybe someday something will happen. DIME offers real-life opportunities for its students and graduates to get into the music industry.

Have you seen a lot of growth in your students?

Yes, from the first graduating class this past summer, for example, I have seen a lot of development of these students. I see some of them forming bands, and see them become my colleagues submitting songs and doing co-writes. I’ve watched them put into practice the things that I’ve taught them, and it’s working for them, and they are actually starting to make a living in the music industry. It’s amazing, it really is!

What are some things that you do outside of DIME that filter back into the classroom?

My work with A-Plus (my songwriting duo) to fulfill our contract with Universal Publishing Group definitely makes its way into the classroom. As songwriters, Anesha and I are working in TV and film as well as releasing an album on Original 1265 Recordings. Because of stuff like this, I can relay the real-life ins and outs of the industry back to my students. I can relay our struggles and victories in the music industry. It’s not something that happened 15 years ago. It’s literally like: I’m just getting off a plane, running into class on Monday and now I have a story to tell my students about what happened to me over the weekend. So, it’s a continuous cycle of: as I learn and grow and achieve I bring it back to the classroom week to week.

What’s one of your proudest moments as a teacher at DIME?

The first graduating class would definitely have to be my proudest moment. We often get caught up in the school year, running around getting students ready;

“…but to see them at their final performance as equals in the music industry, as people who actually can do this and can thrive… I felt like it was, by far, one of my biggest accomplishments as a teacher.”

All Graduates - EM copy

To see these young artists come in as freshman and then be able to perform on this level was great. And, I’m hard to move performance-wise. But, their final performance moved me to the point of crying so much that I couldn’t even speak. I thought, “oh this is good. This means something.” I was just proud and amazed, because you don’t really notice the growth in the plant until you turn on the lights and admire it. And, that is what that moment was for me. It was amazing to see students become full-grown artists, and to know I played a part in it.

Anything else you want to add about your experience at DIME over the last 4 years?

DIME has been fantastic. DIME has changed me as a person, far beyond music, songwriting, and artistry. Being in a position to help rear singers and songwriters has really helped me to also learn something about myself. I have also been exposed to what music and pop culture are now. I’m really looking forward to the years to come at DIME.

DIME’s Wellness Week kicks off today!

We are very excited to launch our first ever Wellness Week today! DIME’s Student Services team have organized a range of activities and workshops which aim to raise awareness of the importance of self-care and good mental health. Each day of the week is themed, and will focus on promoting a specific way that students can manage their mental health. Themes include mindfulness, gratitude, fitness, positive self-image, and healthy eating. We are also looking forward to welcoming some external guests. A representative from local mental health charity Suck it Suicide will be on hand to answer questions from students on Monday, while Lauren from the Arbor Wellness Center will be joining us for a yoga session on Wednesday. On Friday we welcome guests from Michigan State’s Extension Program who will be sharing healthy eating ideas and tips on how to eat well on a college student’s budget.

A recent study published in October by Help Musicians UK found that 70% of musicians have struggled with anxiety and depression. Activities such as Wellness Week have been designed to address these high percentages and promote positive engagement with mental health.  DIME’s Head of Student Services, Jess Hamlin, said:

“Student support is at the heart of DIME’s ethos. Our aim is to ensure that every student feels supported and able to get help if they need it. We also want students to know that sometimes it’s okay not to be okay, and that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. We hope that Wellness Week helps to de-stigmatize mental illness, and provide students with positive ways to manage their mental health.”

Outside of Wellness Week, students are able to access 1-2-1 support from the Student Services team at any time. DIME has also developed relationships with local agencies who can offer free and low cost therapy, housing services, and addiction programs. For questions, please contact Student Services.

Student Spotlight: Ryan Haley (Guitar)

DIME Detroit caught up with one of our newest students,  Ryan Haley who is studying the Commercial Music Performance (Guitar)  degree program.

Ryan 2

1.What is your background in music and education?
I started playing guitar when I was 9, and went through a whole mess of band programs in high school. I was big into playing Tuba, and almost went after that as a career! Eventually, I got wise and decided to run with guitar, which was my primary instrument anyway.

2.How did you find out about DIME Detroit?
I first found out about DIME through the Keith Moon drum contest that was filmed when The Who came to town last and played on the big screen at the concert at Joe Louis. I thought that it was such a cool idea, and was the first things that drew me to DIME.

3.What made you choose to apply to study with us?
I think it was DIME’s accessibility and welcoming recruitment staff that drove me to pursue an education in music. Financial Aid for me was IMPOSSIBLE to figure out, (as I’m hoping a lot of other people understand) and I never felt intimidated or hesitant to ask Elise, Drew, or anyone else for answers.

4.What are your short and/or longer term academic and career goals?
I think more than anything, I want to feel good about myself as a musician. To be able to call myself proficient as a guitar player and be really comfortable in saying so is all I’ve ever been after.

5.What do you find most rewarding about your studies so far?
Having instructors that can give me consistently challenging and valuable content to play or learn. Being a guitarist at DIME gives me a sense that a plateau in skill doesn’t exist. There’s always something to improve, and the faculty here have really helped me attack many of my bad playing habits.

6.What do you find most challenging about your studies and how do you plan to overcome that challenge?
I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself to be a good player. Being surrounded by outstanding musicians at every glance makes this a really easy habit to fall into. So far, the best plan I’ve devised to overcome that feeling is to just play and practice as much as I can. Hopefully one day I can catch up to the curve!

7.Who are some of your music influences? / Who is your role model?
I’ve always wanted to be as versatile and as dedicated to my roots as Eric Clapton is. He’s been my favorite guitarist since I fell into Blues music, and has a really great catalog of tunes to listen to and learn from.
