Trevor Powers Bio

Trevor Powers (born March 18, 1989, in San Diego, CA) is an American musician, producer, and composer based in Boise, ID. While taking crash courses in classical theory, jazz, and ancient modes throughout the time that followed, Powers started making music experiments inspired by the visual works of artists such as Francis Bacon, Sister Gertrude Morgan, and Harry Clarke. Lining his walls in crude print-outs of pictures, he found graphic saturation helped inform the social and spiritual themes of his music.

For two years, Powers crafted his own library of sounds, grotesque and bewitching, to serve as the backbone to the poetry he had been writing while traveling between Europe, Asia, and the United States. Embracing a combination of noise, beauty, and mercurial avant-pop atmospheres, he began molding these experiments into songs highlighting the intersection of unity and chaos, nightmares, and the invisible forces at war within the human self.

Retreating to Tornillo, Texas, Powers brought his songs and a handful of contributors to Sonic Ranch, a residential studio complex in the middle of a 2,300-acre orchard, to record Mulberry Violence – the debut album under his birth name. The six-week tracking process consisted of fusing together and manipulating elements recorded over the previous two years with textures, arrangements, and programming created at the ranch. The album was mixed in Los Angeles by frequent Beyoncé collaborator Stuart White.

Caring for the Whole Musician: DIME Detroit’s Fall 2018 Wellness Week

It's tough being a college student - balancing work, school, friends, and family obligations can be difficult for anyone. It’s also hard to be a creative, whether that’s as a performer, writer, or visionary entrepreneur. At DIME, we know that it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the pressures of student life and the music industry.

That’s why DIME’s Student Services team takes a week every semester to encourage students to focus on their personal wellbeing. This semester, DIME Detroit's Wellness Week took place from September 17 – 21.

Wellness activities kicked off with Peaches and Greens Market setting up a farm stand in our Acoustic Space. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy snacks were available for purchase.

Yoga

To help students find some balance, DIME brought in Lauren Tatarsky, a yoga instructor, to lead a yoga workshop. Stretches and poses focused on the unique needs of student musicians, from drummers' sore wrists to stressed-out shoulders.

Meditation, Vision Boards, Dancing, and more!

Other activities during Wellness Week included a guided meditation session led by Music Industry Studies instructor Toya Hankins, a vision board workshop led by Campus Manager DeAnna Johnson, and a nutrition and recipe information table from Michigan State's Extension Nutrition Education program. Head of Music Industry Studies, Stephanie Belcher, also led students in a fun, stress-relieving session of Just Dance! Another highlight of the week was Juanita Tookes, a PhD candidate in Counseling Education, leading an extended session designed to address mental health concerns specific to musicians. Students were able to learn about positive coping mechanisms, dealing with stress, and how to get help.

As professionals who use their minds, bodies, and emotions as a vital part of their work every day, it's important for musicians to take time to rest and reflect. DIME’s Student Services is happy to provide these opportunities to our students each semester!

Ghost-Note bio

Headed by Snarky Puppy’s multi-Grammy–winning percussion duo of Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth, Ghost-Note is an explosion of sound. With an expansive roster of next-level musicians—representing members of Prince, Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, Marcus Miller, Toto, Justin Timberlake, and more—the band is pushing funk music into the future, building on the uplifting, pioneering foundations laid out by the likes of James Brown and Sly & The Family Stone and infusing their fresh take with tastes of afrobeat, hip-hop, psychedelia, world folklore, and more.

With the release of 2018’s Swagism, Ghost-Note has made their mission clear. The album puts rhythm at the forefront, with irresistible, heavy-hitting beats underlying the group’s wild, rich music. Featuring numerous guest collaborators, including Kamasi Washington, Karl Denson, Bobby Sparks, Nigel Hall, Taz, and others, Swagism showcases the band’s stunning ability to meld and amplify sounds, ultimately adding to Ghost-Note’s sharp, complex collaborations.

Fearless, both in Swagism’s sonic depth and conscious social commentary, the band easily translates this adventurousness in a live setting. Ghost-Note’s live performances are bold and in your face, with the group offering up none of the tight-laced pretenses frequently associated with the band’s jazz roots. Focused on creating seductive danceable grooves and a contagious feel-good energy, each show is an opportunity to let loose and connect, for both fans and the musicians alike.

After forming in 2015, Ghost-Note has already begun to take the world by storm. The group’s two studio albums—2018’s Swagism and 2015’s fortified—have earned critical acclaim and popular success around the globe, with both albums hitting the #1 spot on the iTunes jazz charts. Furthermore, the ever-growing family of musicians has mounted successful headlining tours in the United States, Canada, and Japan and performed at high-profile international music festivals and events.

The Four Korners Bio

An original live instrumental music band, The 4 Korners play jazz fusion, though they prefer to call their sounds “Journey Music.” The ensemble is composed of Clarence “T-lee” Hill on keys, James “JT” Thompson on bass, Isaac “Ike” Thompson on guitar, and Jerrod “J-rod” Sullivan on drums. They are connected in a variety of ways, and their bonds are strengthened by their shared passion for playing music that creates experiences.

JT and Ike are brothers, and along with J-rod, they are from Cartersville, a town in Bartow County, Georgia. Clarence is from Acworth, another town in Bartow County, and JT, Ike, and Clarence have been friends for more than twenty years, first meeting at a musical held at New Beginning Church in Emerson in 2000. J-rod came on board in 2013 as the band’s new drummer, two years after their 2011 formation.

Having toured with major artists, The 4 Korners dropped their first album, an eponymous indie record, in 2014, and in 2015 they signed with Ropeadope Records. Their first and to date only album with Ropeadope Records, Portal of Gold, was released in October 2016. In July 2017, they released a single, “Phraseology,” on their own.

The 4 Korners are known for playing with an inimitably high level of energy. They cite as key influences Chick Corea, Yellow Jackets, and Dave Weckl, though their sound is uniquely their own. When you are listening to The 4 Korners, you are being transported to someplace else, someplace that only you can see, someplace that you share with the world at large.
