Tell us about your background; how did you get started working in the music industry?
Playing live music has always been exciting to me. I started getting asked to perform while in high school. I would do talent shows, battle of the bands, mostly school functions. After high school, I started performing with different local musicians and eventually studying music in college, which led me to be a working guitarist in Detroit.
What inspired you to work in music?
Being around other musicians at festivals was a life-changing experience. I started meeting people from all over the country that had such fascinating stories to tell. It was all just a lot of fun and exciting to be around.
What do you do when you’re not working at DIME?
I’m very dedicated to my practice routine. Most of my time is spent preparing for performances or learning a different musical style. I try to be prepared for whatever musical situation is thrown my way. Outside of music I spend as much time with my fiancé and family that I can.
What is your favorite class to teach at DIME?
Currently, Group Performance Instruction is my favorite class. I’m in my fourth semester teaching this class. I enjoy it because the skill level of the students is always different, this presents a challenge to me. Having different challenges keeps things fresh, and is a good environment for growth I believe.
What has been your proudest moment as a DIME Instructor?
I had a student recently tell me that I instilled confidence in them, and that I made them realise that they had a much greater potential than they had realized. I’m grateful to have an impact on someone in this way.
Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
My first inspiration was Jimmy Page, followed by early Eric Clapton. As I got more into jazz and other styles I gained inspiration from Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and many more.
What are you listening to right now? Do you have any recommendations we should check out?
My current favorite guitarists are Leonardo Amuedo, Josh Smith, Marcus King, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. They are all very different yet inspiring in their own ways.
